An orangutan, with which we shared a common ancestor only 14 million years ago. The name "orangutan", meaning "people of the forest", describes their role within the Borneo and Sumatran rain forests of Southeast Asia. These great apes are highly intelligent and exercise the ability to construct foraging tools, sophisticated aeries that can support their weight at night, and are even capable of playing touch-screen video games at a zoo in Georgia! Tragically, orangutans are highly endangered.

The black and white makes this even more emotional. Great capture of a beautiful creature.

I looked through all of your Gallery and there is some wonderful work here. I have to say that this must be one of my fav. I have a very soft spot for creatures that can no longer live like they were intended to because of mans infinite greed.

Thanks for taking the time to look through my gallery! And I completely agree with your sentiments, it's tragic what deforestation has done.

Yes, their rainforests are being cut down to make way for Palm Oil production, ie the planting of Palm. Shame it's a captive animal not a wild one. Bless him

I hope to see one in its natural habitat, outside of a reservation, someday. Though I doubt I'll be so fortunate. It's truly a shame how shortsighted humanity can be at times. It worries me to think that a species of our fellow apes could go extinct within our lifetime.

As I type this a couple of friends are in Sumatra, filming Orang-utan for the BBC NHU.

That's awesome! Are they focusing on just one of the species of orangutan or are they doing a broader overview?

Habitat destruction & Palm oil production, and how it's destroying the whole ecology of the area, not just for orangs but also humans.
